Double handling is not a reason for disqualification. The judge may excuse
the dog...or penalize it...but since it is not in the Standard, it is NOT a
DQ.
Also, I remind you, that in many European breeds, it is expected to
double handle...that is how it started here. It is just that in typical
American fashion, we went way overboard.
You can see discrete doubling going on at every single show you go to,
if you bother to look, and if you know what to look for.
I personally have stood right next to the AKC field rep at a few shows and
doubled dogs, and the rep never knew what was going on.
In countries where it is de rigeur, it is used on dogs with drop
ears...it is for more than getting ears up. It was explained to me many,
many years ago that dogs were too smart to keep running around and around,
that's one of the other reasons to use doublers. In Germany, for example,
some breeds at their Seiger shows are kept gaiting almost all day
long...from dawn till dusk.
Doublers can trade places...as can handlers. (and we used to change handlers
here, too, in the Shepherd ring)...but the dog must trot all day long.
