Hi all,
I must say this discussion caught my attention. Today, I was in Los Angeles
taking one of my girls to see our cardiologist and had an opportunity to ask
a veterinary opthalmologist(the cardiologist shares a practice with an
internist and an opthalmologist)whether or not she's noticed that Geographic
Retinal Dysplasia is more prevelant among wholecolor Cavaliers. As she
shares a practice with a board certified Cardiologist and participates in
CKCSC, USA sponsored Heath Fairs, and, therefore, sees a large number of
Cavaliers, I thought she would be a good one to ask. She has not noticed
that the instance of GRD is any greater in wholecolors than it is in the
parties, but that certainly GRD is a concern in the breed.
All the best,
Susan V.

Hi, Sharon,
Well you must be doing something right all of these years. (No
doubt in
MY mind about that!).
However, I knew I had heard some statistics on this, and thank someone
who emailed me this link the the UK club site:
http://www.cavalierclub.co.uk/breed/health.html
At least one study suggests that RD is three times as common in
wholecolors. I'm not supporting this particular study (perhaps someone
in the UK could tell us more about it), but taking note that it exists.
Best,
Suze

Hi Suze,
Happy to say I've never had RD in any of my dogs, parti or whole color.

Sharon

Suze,
That has not been my experience as a wholecolor breeder, maybe Sharon
Gamboni can add her experience or Debbie Meyers.

Hi, Laura,
I'm curious; is there no information that wholecolors may be more
prone
to RD than particolors? It was my understanding that some of the
wholecolor breeders were having more difficulty with RD than are some of
the particolor breeders.
I don't have any reason in particular to believe either way, but that
information was anecdoctal and I'm curious to know if there is any
substance to it.
