To tie this into the Pepsi/Coke comment, how about some good marketing
placements?  Specifically, if you're doing a demo of Linux to a new user (or
group of...), make your desktop background a picture of Tux.  After a few
demos, the person will start asking "What's with the penguin?".  Now you
have brand recognition, as good as the Pepsi beach ball or the Coke
distinctive bottle.  :-)
