~    I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss CUPS. I know it works with
LPD-style printers, and has an excellent web interface for
administration. It can emulate the standard LPD tools as well. I don't
know how well it handles high loads, though.

~    As for distros, pick whichever you are most comfortable with. After
disabling any unneeded services and installing the lastest secuity
patches, they are all equally capable.
