That was the trick! I restarted up in Gnome and setup the sound server and now I have the system sounds AND Real Player :o) using ESD. I haven't used Gnome for a while, I do like the different features that KDE and Gnome provide, but I was leaning to KDE for various reasons. At least Linux can offer different window managers, unlike the legacy os's provide.
