I tried your suggestion in KDE and it worked out great! I typed in "artsdsp realplay" in term, and set RP with the Esound option (the other options gave me the warning message again) The sound quality is pretty good now in KDE. No offense to Gnome users on the list, but I find the options with KDE more to my liking :o)

i'm using RP with its Native driver support and running aRts, no problem. however, if you do try both native and OSS and neither works out, rather than installing ESD and having yet another sound server around, try:
artsdsp reaplay
this will run realplay through the artsdsp wrapper with fakes out the running app into thinking it has direct access to the sound card when in fact it is going through aRts...
