Oh, I threw this idea at Rob while we were at the Convergence meeting: What if we did a Emacs versus VI evening? Or "Linux Console Editing" as a topic? As I understand it Emacs is probably a big enough topic to fill the entire meeting time. I have asked Rob to keep it fast and loose.
I guess what I am hoping to see, is somebody (like Rob) do presentations on using a terminal (or console?) based text editor for those fast and dirty edits of the odd configuration file. Both applications have some neat features. I know I would like to learn more about them. I know I personally don't use VI (or VIM to be more accurate) half as efficiently as I could but I know it's all about practice and reading the docs and playing with it. Hell, we could even throw PICO in there for a lark. Just to reiterate what these presentations are for, they are supposed to be in introduction to the topic of the day. There have been some pretty heavy presentations in the past year. Some have been very interesting, some have been very long. I think we have done a pretty good job of having one every month and each presentation has drawn its own crowd of interested individuals. I think we can do even better this year. There is nothing stopping anyone from doing a more advanced user presentation. I certainly don't want to discourage anyone from doing this. After all we are a group of varied individuals with different skill sets. I am just happy that we are doing them. They seem to be a very important part of our meetings. Last month Marcel and I did a presentation on Linux Survival and I hope that we did a decent job. We intended to start the year off right and give some new folks a leg up in getting started with Linux. I think we even threw some stuff out there of interest to the folks who've been working with Linux for a while. The notes will be available soon, I promise.
