I ran
into some speed issues with Telus last week myself. To resolve the problem
I cycled the power on the DSL modem. I also rebooted my firewall (which is
an IPCop Linux box).
As for
security - I'd strongly recommend turning as much back on as you
can.
Normally, when you have a system that's running well, and it just
suddenly stops running so well, the first thing you have to ask is "What have I
changed?". If you haven't changed anything that would have this sort of
effect, you next have to check your infrastructure (i.e. your network, firewall,
Internet Connection, etc.). If that still doesn't find/resolve the
problem, the next option would be to look and see if you are hacked. I've
heard stories of people running FTP servers, that suddenly get hacked and end up
serving out pirated software without their knowledge. Do you have any way
to monitor network utilization? Has your traffic spiked
significantly? If so, you might want to isolate your FTP server to test it
further, and maybe rebuild it.
Hope
this helps some.

Thank you for responding,
I did a poor job of explaining my problem (Hein
sight is always 2020), I am on Telus ADSL, and
I use static IPs inside my network. The 10base T is not a bad idea, but the
delay is just to big to account for that, it takes up to 5minutes to
connect to the FTP server, then 2 or 3 min for every action (including
changing a directory). I am sorry I don't know what IPCop is? As for
securities when this started happening I turned every bit of security on the
firewall off, then I move to a Linksys router, and disabled any security
there. Same issue. The funny thing is the Web services (on the same computer)
run fast... As far as I know the settings on the users would not allow you to
slow someone down to this speed, I may be wrong (7 months of Linux use under
my belt and all :) , but please keep the ideas coming I am just lost on
this...
