1) You can try to manually adjust the display resolution in the xorg.conf file by adding the resolution to the section "Screen" and verifying your display settings. 2) You can install the "laptop-mode tools" and follow the instructions to adjust the power management of your laptop as well as hard disk tuning among other things.
