The only part that mattered. FYI, posting the whole thing without
editing can be annoying, since I *know* you are bright enough to figure
out what was relevant.
I am more forgiving of the xorg.conf file, since you don't (yet) know
where everything is.

My monitor definition looks like this:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Generic Monitor"
HorizSync 30.0 - 67.0
VertRefresh 30.0 - 60.0
Option "DPMS"
EndSection
I would also add the 1024x768 and 800x600 modes to each colour depth.
Not that you really need them, but they can come in handy.
You can also run dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg -p low
to have debconf step you through various xserver settings. The medium
and expert options for monitor parameters have some decent options for
setting the correct resolution and refresh rates.
I prefer editing manually, but then there are a lot of options that you
can tweak when get more familiar with the xorg.conf file. If you ever
get to use binary blobs (evil though they may be) there are a ton more
options that can be set here.
