My __limited__ experience with laptops was to run the dpkg-reconfigure 
server-xorg (if you are using Xorg) command and set what you needed for your 
primary display there. After running that command, make sure you restart the 
X-server and leave the settings as is.

I haven't tried playing around with any other settings or try setting up a 
second monitor.
