Since in my workshop I will be relying on 64Studio, I will be providing
the iso and a couple disks independent from the "official" linux distro
(I am not commercially entangled with them, I am just a very happy user).

I would also say that Fedora and Ubuntu make good choices, though I
would hesitate on an either or decision.  The two camps are fairly
distinct and under the hood they both differ significantly enough that I
would not want to force someone in one direction or the other.  This is
particularly true if collectively RH/Fedora/Some Derivative is chosen :)

I would tend to favour Kubuntu as the particular flavour, though it is
no different than Ubuntu (you are only an aptitude install
kubuntu-desktop away).
