Hi Guys, The model I settled on is the Acer Aspire 5630-6288. The link below should give a good overview of the specs for the machine. I wasn't looking for a high-end gaming machine or anything, just something mobile that would provide good compatibility with Linux.
http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/PID-MX17989(ME).aspx At any rate, I'm quite pleased so far. I've installed the latest Ubuntu and Kubuntu (don't ask, I'm a desktop junkie :-) and the hardware detection and setup was painless for everything I've tried out (only for Ubuntu at this point): * X was setup with the correct resolution and refresh rate on boot * Compiz-fusion was enabled by default and works surprisingly well * Sound works (volume seems to behave as expected when playing music) * USB looks good... hooked up a keyboard and mouse that both worked perfectly * Wireless setup was simple, which is good, because I'm a networking dummy :-) * Burned a couple of CDs which worked without issue. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the performance. If heavy 3D is on your wish-list, though, I'd avoid the Intel video (I tried Celestia just to see, and it was pretty sluggish). > Or just add 'Hot-rodded with Linux' ;-) > I could go for that. :-) At least the Vista stickers are gone now--I was afraid if I waited too long they'd melt onto the case out of spite. Cheers, Rick. _______________________________________________ clug-talk mailing list [email protected] http://clug.ca/mailman/listinfo/clug-talk_clug.ca Mailing List Guidelines (http://clug.ca/ml_guidelines.php) **Please remove these lines when replying
