Hi Guys,

The model I settled on is the Acer Aspire 5630-6288. The link below
should give a good overview of the specs for the machine. I wasn't looking
for a high-end gaming machine or anything, just something mobile that
would provide good compatibility with Linux.

At any rate, I'm quite pleased so far. I've installed the latest Ubuntu and
Kubuntu (don't ask, I'm a desktop junkie :-) and the hardware detection and
setup was painless for everything I've tried out (only for Ubuntu at this
point):

* X was setup with the correct resolution and refresh rate on boot
* Compiz-fusion was enabled by default and works surprisingly well
* Sound works (volume seems to behave as expected when playing music)
* USB looks good... hooked up a keyboard and mouse that both worked
perfectly
* Wireless setup was simple, which is good, because I'm a networking
dummy :-)
* Burned a couple of CDs which worked without issue.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with the performance. If heavy 3D is on your
wish-list, though, I'd avoid the Intel video (I tried Celestia just to
see, and
it was pretty sluggish).

I could go for that. :-)

At least the Vista stickers are gone now--I was afraid if I waited too
long they'd melt onto the case out of spite.

Cheers,
Rick.
