After a little more usage I've found one thing that could be a problem. Apparently, there's a bug in the latest and previous versions of Ubuntu that can cause excessive wear and tear on some disks. It has to do with overly aggressive parking of the read/write heads in power-save mode.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi-support/+bug/59695 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/104535 This problem is definitely present on my notebook, even when connected to AC. smartctl reported my Load_Cycle_Count going up about two or three times a minute. The problem goes away when I do as they suggest for a workaround: "hdparm -B 255 /dev/sda" Not sure how much of an issue this is, but the Ubuntu devs have marked it as confirmed, so I just wanted to pass it along in case anyone else hits it. Does this amount of spin down seem excessive? Rick
