The suggestion in the bug report and here: http://www.linux-hero.com/rant/explanation-ubuntu-hard-drive-wear-and-tear#comment-5
is that it's most likely the BIOS' default setting causing this high rate of unloading, and that unless you've enabled laptop mode (disabled by default) Ubuntu doesn't adjust the drive settings. Not sure about the situation with older machines BIOS date <2000 where apm is used instead of acpi. Simon.
