Maybe you can find a place which sells "bare metal" laptops (i.e. without an
OS) so you avoid paying the "Microsoft tax".   Then it would be pretty
straight forward to install linux.

Maybe HP would sell a laptop with linux is since it claims to "suppot
linux".

I bought my wife a "refurbished" Gateway laptop on line from Future Shop
which had XP on it, thus minimizing the "Microsoft tax".  So far it has
worked well, although she won't yet let me install linux on it!
