A big thanks for all the input, guys--it helped a lot. Memory Express was very helpful and had a notebook that will work well for me.
I did have a fight with the pre-loaded copy of Vista (it crashed on me while trying to make the recovery DVDs), but the new Ubuntu installed without a hitch after I wiped the drive. Now I just have to get those "Designed for Windows Vista" stickers off and life will be good. :-) Rick.
