This is true on both counts.  The firewire port used to work out of the
box with Mythtv, but Shaw locked this down a year or two ago.  This is
the main reason why I no longer subscribe to Shaw's HD services even
though I have an HD TV and an HD capable digital box.

Btw, for downloaded HD content, these little guys work extremely well:
