We had a rule in a facility where I used to work that all department heads and all nurses had to be in the dining rooms to help feed patients.  That ended quickly when the Activities assistant gave a resident a piece of hot dog on a fork which he choked on and died because they couldn't reach the bolus of meat in the trachea.  The nurses are were still feeding when I left, and because there was two seatings, the period of time taken was approx. 2 1/2 hours a day!  Does the Administrator really want the people who bring in the money to the facility (with the MDS assessments) spending a minimum of 5 hours to a maximum of 12 hours a week feeding rather than assessing?  Are you paid overtime to do the assessments you can't do because you're feeding?  Depends on how many patients the facility has, and how many spare hands (hah!)  Are the floor nurses out there too?  The DON?  The administrator?

Subject: MDS Co. feeding residents!

Budget time and our Administrator has come up with a dilly! All MDS Coordinators are to feed residents at  mealtimes. Anyone else doing this? Someone must be because he says he has seen it at many facilities! I guess this will be a perfect time to do our assessments! ACorn
