Most states do not require a 6 (return not anticipated) discharge following a 7 (return anticipated) or 08 (prior to initial) if the resident does not return. The resident will also not show up on the missing assessment report in the scheduled monthly reports in those states.
Check with your state RAI coordinator to verify for your state. You don't want to complete any unnecessary assessments.
On the original question.....most of our facilities would submit 08 (prior to initial) only. However we do have one state that would require that to be followed by an 06 (return not anticipated) with the date of death.

CMS does not require that you change resident to discharge not anticipated. You are not supposed to but our software company changes it for us so that they don't forever show up on reports.Check with your software vendor.----- Original Message -----From: Corey AliSent: Friday, December 26, 2003 6:15 PMSubject: Re: how to codeThe only problem in coding expected to return is that if you DO NOT submit another discharge not expected to return due to death, you will show that resident for almost forever as missing assessments.
