My husband has been taking Gleevec for 3 years. Like your son, his
counts stabilized right away and have stayed there. The current
understanding is that this is a drug CML patients will take their
entire lives. It has been compared to diabetes or hypertension in
that the disease doesn't go away, but it is controlled by
medication. If the medication is stopped, the overproduction of
white blood cells would continue.

Let him know that the side effects become less troublesome over time
for most people. The trick is finding a way to take Gleevec without
getting sick. My husband takes it with a big meal (lunch) with lots
of carbs and if he feels like he may be ill, he tops it off with a
small ice cream cone (perfect meal for someone who lives in a
dorm!). His side effects are manageable. He has not missed one day
of work in 3 years due to his CML.

It took a LONG time to turn our focus away from thinking about CML
every minute. I also have 2 college students and can understand how
difficult this would be for your son. However, he should be able to
go to school and his normal life while taking Gleevec.

I wish him the best!

Tammi
