This is a wonderful response to Gleevec. I was diagnosed in 2/03
and was on Hydrea for about 3 weeks to reduce my wbc of 97,000 and
then started 400mg of Gleevec. About 2-3 weeks my white cells
became too low so I went a a coupleof weeks without Gleevec
(vacation) while everything stabilized and returned to 400mg dosage
and have never had to look back. I was PCRU (undetectable) in June
03. I know this is scary for you, my wife (caretaker) worries
everytime there is the least little change, but have faith and if
the Doctor is monitoring is blood counts weekly or bi-weekly right
now that is great. If the Dr. has other CML patients that is also a
big plus. My ONC has two other patients so he does consult with MD
Anderson and follows their guidelines. You will find this support
group will respond to any questions you have. We know each of us
respond differently to Gleevec, so a broad base of simular answers
will help your son to make informed decisions about living with
CML. Hopefully, sometime in the near future they will find the cure
but it is so comforting to know that we have many treatments
available after only 5 short years.
