I am sorry to hear about your son being diagnosed 4th of July and new to Gleevec.  It's a place that none of us want to see our children have to be.  The advice here to see a leukemia specialist is definitely some you should consider.  The more that we see the folks who know about CML, the better chance that through treatment in large numbers, they will be able to determine the best course of treatment for all of the CML patients.
Please do not decrease your son's Gleevec dose from 400 mg.  Read everything you can get your hands on and you will find that less than 400 mg is not recommended due to the chance of building a resistance to it.  It takes a couple of months to get over the worst of the side effects, so it should start getting better for him soon.
Hang in there.  Be an advocate for your son.  Where do you live?
Sue
