Hi Jeanie, Roy drinks coffee right after his evening meal and Gleevec and he has been doing that for 4 years. There was some discussion about this among patients and the only thing we could come up with why coffee may not be recommended with Gleevec was that it may irritate the stomach and cause diarrhea.
However, even with that warning, Roy goes on guzzling coffee right after his evening meal and when we are at restaurants, he takes his Gleevec with the coffee. He really likes his coffee. I would not worry about it except for the diarrhea bit. Grapefruit juice is quite different, it is not recommended with Gleevec because it increases the Gleevec concentration in the blood.
