Ideally, members would be able to choose between instant email
alerts and/or
weekly digests of all content that has been added to the site under
the
categories they choose.
I would need to be able to customise the emails, via a template
system.
Does anyone know of any CMS systems that do this out of the box?
If not, any recommendations as to a starting point to develop a
customised
system that would do this?
My preference is for a LAMP based system.
If you are looking for a solution that:
a) allows skilled developers the ability to architect the system is a
clean, maintainable, easily upgradable, scalable way, and
b) provides the content authors/marketing team who are to maintain the
website, to do so without technical expertise, and with considerable
productivity,

c) is open source, LAMP-based (PHP5), and yet has professional support
as well as free forum/IRC support, and
d) has been battle-tested through over 100,000 downloads and through

)
Then I would say download silverstripe and using some clean object
oriented code, hook into the registration system and page-adding
system to provide the email alerts you need.
The online community will guide you on how to achieve this once you've
taken a moment to do the tutorials, or you can engage the company to
mentor/do it for you.
