On Calypso we have enclosed speakers that hang from the push pit rail with long
cables and connectors. I leave the speakers below (or off the boat when
racing) to prevent weather or physical damage. The connectors are out of the
way below the helmsman seat trim and stay mostly dry.

The big issue onboard is who gets to pick the music. Calypso's co-owner and my
wife do not share my interest in heavy metal and rock and I avoid the more
refined music of their choice (re the elevator kind). Jimmy Buffett has been
the compromise that has worked well in the recent past. Clandestine methods
have been used to restock the disc changer with one's preference.

I second what Rich said; On my boat we were looking for a place to mount new
speakers and couldn't find a suitable area for one reason or another, so we
just put then in the inspection port openings with extra long wires so that if
we needed to get back in we could just take them out and do whatever work is
needed without damaging the speakers or wiring; the speakers are not located
symmetrically, but that has not been an issue... best of luck.

Nate: I'd highly recommend settling for a gift certificate and waiting until
you can do the measurement on site when the snow is gone, or get someone local
to measure and take pictures. There is no guarantee that any other 30-1 is
identical to yours.

Santa is going to upgrade my ancient (cassette player) sound system from the
PO. One issue in picking a new system is cockpit speakers - would be nice if
they fit the existing holes (and yup, should be magnetic shielded too - I
actually use my compass sometimes).

Anyone happen to know the size of the two access plates beneath the engine
compartment vents on the transom of the 30-1? The choices seem to be 6", 8" or
`10". I'm guessing 8"... but the boat is 4 hours away in the snow...
