I have a pair of Clarion speakers in those cutouts (same boat as Alan) -
great sound, and I didn't need to create adapter rings for those speakers,
which are presumably the same nominal diameter.  The 6" x 9" speakers and
separate amp down below really fill the space!  Maybe the bass vibration
caused the keel stub tabbing issues...
