I think one really important thing is to keep the rods clean and shiny. I often find them gunked up and I try to polish them up. Pulling all that crud past the seals can't be good.. I also put a little felt disc where the rod goes into the cylinder to keep the seal from breaking down under the sunlight as Dennis suggested
