Sometimes this kind of thing is just culture-clash; there are places where his style is more normal (often noted by the constant ;)'s to attempt to imply joking).

A private word is often a lot more successful in winning someone over to your culture than trying to deal with it publically.

The classic 'praise in public, criticize in private'.
