Hi, Randal.

I don't know why you are getting an "out of memory" error, but I have a few
ideas that may be of use. Even with MultiFinder activated (and a good amount
of disk cache!), my Classic's System+Finder doesn't take much more than 600
Kb of RAM. This leaves me with about 3.4 Mb of free memory (I have a memory
expansion board loaded with two 1 Mb SIMMs for a total of 4 Mb). With your 2
Mb of RAM and the default settings for disk cache, you should have more than
1 Mb of free RAM after booting, even with the PPP and TCP/IP extensions
loaded, I think.

If the Finder is taking such a huge amount of RAM, it's probably because you
aren't using MultiFinder. If MultiFinder is de-activated, MacOS is running
in monotask mode, and thus the current application (the Finder in this case)
takes all the available memory - no other application is going to need it. I
don't know if PPP or TCP/IP require you to use MultiFinder, but you could
try to enable the MultiFinder using a command from the Special menu (I can't
remember the command's name in English - I use the Spanish version of System
6 in my Classic) and see if it helps.

About the memory expansion board: the Classic comes with 1 MB of RAM
soldered in the motherboard, and a memory expansion slot. There is a memory
expansion card that goes into this slot and has an aditional 1 Mb soldered
into it - thus increasing the RAM size to 2 Mb. The memory expansion board
has also two (initially blank) SIMM sockets that can hold either two 256 Kb
or two 1 Mb SIMMs, summing 2.5 Mb and 4 Mb of RAM, respectively. But I bet
you already know this :-) .

Having said this, it's obvious that you have a "blank" memory expansion
board (you have 1 Mb on the motherboard and 1 Mb soldered on the memory
board). I think it shouldn't be hard to find a couple of nine-chip 1 Mb
SIMMs (for some reason, the Classic doesn't like three-chip SIMMs) and plug
them in the memory card so you get a full 4 Mb (yum!). Just don't forget to
set correctly the jumper in the memory expansion board to indicate that the
sockets are populated.

Greetings,

Antonio Rodrguez (Grijan)
