Well, turns out exactly like I thought... just needed a LOT of time off to reset - apparently when the comp is shut off it freaks out about having no clock battery, partially corrupts the PRAM, then when you try to turn it on, it has a heart attack. So I left it off overnight, it completely cleared the PRAM, and turned it back on... Ding.
No leaking battery... in fact, I've never seen, in all the 10+ mostly-dead Macs I've seen, a leaking battery at all... maybe I'm just lucky :-)
I've never seen a classic with battery damage, Classic II's are a different story altogether. Caps are another sorry story.
As for the power, its why I recommended removing th power cord, macs use power when plugged in, battery or no battery. This delightful little feature causes havoc in many models.
Now to go back to reading all about VM on a 020. :) LOL.
