i have 4 30-pin SIMMS labelled 8MB, and i can't seem to get them to work in my SE/30. is there something special i need to do? are these SIMMS perhaps incompatible with the SE/30?
Apple's Technical Note HW25, "Macintosh Memory Configurations" does not list 8 MB SIMMs as one of the compatible sizes for the SE/30. Only 256K, 1MB, 4MB and 16 MB are listed. There are times when Apple's documentation omits compatible objects from their lists, but everything I remember reading over the years is consistent with this conclusion. Plus, Apple's Technical Notes are usually pretty good, because they're published (presumably) after Apple's engineers have had a little more time to look at what they've sold.
The Developer Notes for each model (which are generally available in PDF from Apple's web site) try to list this information but are often incomplete about such things as support for larger SIMM sizes. Unfortunately, there is no PDF developer note for the SE/30. I think you must own a copy of "The Guide to the Macintosh Family Hardware" to get the equivalent documentation. The GMFH covers the very early models.
Oddball SIMM sizes which are not generally compatible with Macs are 512KB, 2 MB and 8 MB. The IIsi can use the 512KB and the 2MB size according to this tech note. The LC can use the 2 MB SIMMs according to it. I seem to remember that the IIsi also supported 8 MB SIMMs but they are not mentioned in this note.
Anyway, I'm pretty certain that the SE/30 does not support 8 MB SIMMs and it appears that no other Mac supports them either, though it is possible that they will work in something like the IIsi.
