OK. So here's the story so far. I recently acquired a Classic II to
replace my dead Plus (I want to fix the Plus, but I'll ask about that in
another installment).

The first day I got it and turned it on, it just started up with some
vertical bars on the screen. Eventually it booted on it's own after
sitting for a while. Over the next few days it got worse until one day it
would not boot at all. I did an Internet search, and found ONE measly
reference to this problem in a post on some random message board. Someone
said it was commonly related to dust and corrosion, and that a new battery
wouldn't hurt either. Well, knowing I already needed a new battery, I
went out and got one.

I opened it up and installed the battery, then proceeded to clean out ALL
the dust from the logic board. There is no corrosion anywhere that I can
see. I got what I could from the vertical board (power board?) but there
is still dust way back in that corner, and I don't want to risk getting
shocked to death by the picture tube.

So now I turn it on, and half the time it displays those same bars and
half the time it just displays a black screen (which didn't happen
before). I'm worried that maybe I fried the motherboard while cleaning it
(hope not, I've only had the machine a week!). But the hard disk still
spins up which makes me think maybe I didn't. Ever since cleaning it, I
cannot get it to boot at all. To ANYONE out there who has an idea of what
is going on, PLEASE HELP!

Thanks in advance,
  Nat
