I'm not familiar with this particular model, but on some models the verical bars mean you have bad RAM. Try replacing it and see what happens. Alternatively, there may be some corrosion on the contacts between the SIMM and the socket so reseating the memory a few times may help. I really don't know what the black screen would mean.
