Well, like I said, when I first got the machine it booted fine after
either being on for a while with the vertical bars, or repeatedly flipping
the power switch on/off. It just progressively got worse so it took longer
and longer to actually boot up until it just didn't one day, despite being
on showing the vertical bars for 7+ hours. When I was cleaning the dust
off the motherboard, I checked all the contacts and there was absolutely
NO corrosion on anything, including the RAM. I've noticed now (ever since
the cleaning) it will come up with the vertical bars for a while, then
eventually the screen will clear on it's own and just go black without
actually getting as far as the startup bong. Whereas before, when the
bars cleared, it would go into the normal startup routine. Which is what
makes me think maybe I fried the board while cleaning it, despite taking
precautions not to.

But regarding the RAM, what's interesting about this model is that it has
two megabytes of RAM physically already BUILT-IN/soldered to the
motherboard. The one I got has two extra megabytes in the expansion
slots, which is what I checked for good contact.

If the hard disk is still spinning up and the external floppy drive makes
a noise does that mean that the motherboard is still OK and not fried?
