For each drive, you need to find the manufacturers data-sheet for that
model and ensure that all the jumpers are set to enable termination,
etc. Usually just two jumpers somewhere that will activate the built-in
termination-block.
(yes, you CAN find usually find these as PDF's on the web)

AND you then need to check the drive and see if there is (usually a
double) row of empty holes..
If you see that little row... There's a terminating resistor block
missing... You need to find/get them and re-insert.

Or, as John suggests - go find a cable with a terminating block and
bypass the whole drama.

I have a 2Gb and a 1Gb and I also had trouble making them work. In the
end a got a SCSI cable that had a built in terminator block on the end. 
I cut it with scissors so it just had the last two connectors and the
terminator, and the 2Gb lives happily in my Classic II :-) Sadly, the 1
Gb had faulty blocks so I just put it on the shelf.
