Y'know, too, as my damaged brain hazily recalls, the ports on the Classic are nonetheless capable of 115k throughput. Izznat so?
Ever seen anything near that speed via localtalk? I dont think the port itself is crippled, I think the throughput is to much for a 68000 to process or some other hardware bottle neck. Localtalk has its own quirks so its not a good example.
This is not a perfect example but with the classic hooked to a cable connection via a scsi -> ethernet struggles to get over 16.0k. Thats burst speed as it then stops, thinks and has another bite. Its good compared to the 3.3 of your example modems but by the end of dowload the avarage is around the same.
The scsi -> ethernet adaptor is not to blame, it transfers files well accross the lan, the web being different.
A good transfer speed monitor doesn't spring to mind, if you can suggest one I'll plug a 56k in and see whats to see.
Peters comment is valid, BlackKnight(FAT) (full version) is possibly the best term program to use as is provides a few different protocols, that said, error checking would knock the speed around a bit unless turned off. I dont think BK runs on a 000. :( It would provide a speed monitor of sorts. Does Apples connection toolbox work on a classic?
Newer pc modems come with a dual dongle, you usually have a choice of 9 or 25 pin. If you have one end plugged into the pc the loose end can be hooked to the mac via adaptors and either used as a standard modem connection or a null modem connection, given the right adaptor. A mac serial to 25 pin modem cable is *very* handy sometimes and excellent for a cheap network.
I havent used a standard modem for a few years now, this is from memory and lible to be bent. Someone will point out my poor use of "k" to denote speed. Half deliberate as a web guru hasn't explained the whole baud, kbyte, kps thing here for a while and I'm to lazy.
Nullmodem is possibly the fastest way to transfer below ethernet, not easy to learn first up but it can be useful as it crosses all platforms.
