May not be much help, but I have created 1.44 floppy disks from images
using a linux system and dd, I had to convert the image to a read/write
no encryption image using DiskCopy on OS X, I then FTP's the image to my
Linux box and simply did:

dd if=disk.dmg of=/dev/fd0

Now OS X also has a dd command so in theory you may be able to dd direct
to the USB drive's device, but I don't have a USB drive so I wouldn't
know what the device would be.
