Two points:
[In context of systems made in mid-80s to early 90s]
I haven't found a single instance where any Microsoft OS outshone a Mac
OS during the aforementioned time period. Yes, there were a lot of
apps for the Wintel boxen, but back then, I really didn't need a whole
lot, either. I've still have some classic games, some killer apps, and
useful tools for the Mac (see my previous post about my answering
machine) and I play/use them all the time. Heck, Jobs had his Mac
talking in '84. Pretty advanced for anything back then.
[Now, to address stuff outside of the scope of this forum]
Not to belabor a point, but since many flavors of *nix is freely
available, why not use something cheaper? I've used Linux (along with
just about every window manager that has been put out) since '92 or
'93, but have never been satisfied with the smooth integrated feel of
Mac OSX. I've used DOS/Windows since the mid-80's and never have I
gotten the interface to work with me. The older Mac OSes work the way
I do. OS X did take some getting used to, but I picked it up quickly.
I don't find anything on XP that I feel I need on OSX. I use XP at
work, which usually involves loading hotfixes and rebooting. <G> Not
something I'd like to duplicate on my Mac. <G>

My point exactly. My computer purchases are purely aesthetics, never
for function.
If Windows was functionally equivalent to Mac OS X (or to any sane
operating system) I'd be using it. I don't avoid it because I hate
the GUI or anything, in fact I think there's a lot of really good
features of the Windows GUI that the Mac should borrow, but because
Windows does not actually provide the capabilities I need.
