If this is a battery issue there may be an inexpensive way to get a replacement. Apples battery replacement plan costs $59 + $6.95 for the replacement of out of warranty iPod batteries. They ship you a new (to you at least) iPod with a fresh battery. They don't say whether the replacements are refurbished or new. I suspect that they may be a mixture of both.
They say this is a replacement for a battery whose life has dropped by 50%. I haven't tried it but I'm curious as to what does come back.
