Ian,

Thank you for the quick response.  Unfortunately, xmms doesn't seem to do the trick either.  I'm not sure what's going on here.  When I run the command 'amixer' to check the levels of the various inputs and outputs - I notice the following under 'CD':

Group 'CD',0
  Capabilities: capture jointly-capture
  Channels: Front-Left Front-Right
  Limits: min = 0, max = 0
  Front-Left: 0 [0%] [on] [---]
  Front-Right: 0 [0%] [on] [---]

Notice that the 'Limits' line is interesting ...

Is this what's kickin' my butt?  All other sound seems to work now ... just not CD!

I'm at somewhat of a loss ... I appear to have audio working, however I
cannot play my CDs. I'm using the ALSA system - and if I test the audio
by going into Look'NFeel in the Control Center - I can play the system
sounds just fine. However, neither kscd nor freeamp seem to be able to
play CD audio. Why is this?

There isn't a standard analog connection from the cdrom to the sound card
on the new macs. If you use xmms there is a plugin for doing cd audio
which should work.
