Thank you for the quick response. Unfortunately, xmms doesn't seem to do the trick either. I'm not sure what's going on here. When I run the command 'amixer' to check the levels of the various inputs and outputs - I notice the following under 'CD':
Group 'CD',0
Capabilities: capture jointly-capture
Channels: Front-Left Front-Right
Limits: min = 0, max = 0
Front-Left: 0 [0%] [on] [---]
Front-Right: 0 [0%] [on] [---]
Notice that the 'Limits' line is interesting ...
Is this what's kickin' my butt? All other sound seems to work now ... just not CD!

There isn't a standard analog connection from the cdrom to the sound card
on the new macs. If you use xmms there is a plugin for doing cd audio
which should work.
