I've given up ... I tried the xmms-cdread plugin and (a) it didn't load citing unresolved symbol 'playlist_delete_node' - so I went into the code and 'lo and behold - the function was prototyped, but never defined - excellent ;) - it didn't seem to do anything terribly important, so I commented it out & recompiled, so that the module would load, which it did.  

Unfortunately, (b) disabling the cdaudio extension in xmms causes it to crash (hitting 'apply' or 'OK' in the Options dialog causes a seg fault) - so I manually removed /usr/lib/xmms/Input/libcdaudio* so that it would default to the cdread Input plugin, which it did ...

But, apparently (c) the plugin doesn't work ... it won't even show the tracks from the CD, unless I'm doing something entirely wrong ... (browsing to /mnt/cdrom doesn't show the tracks as it did under the cdaudio plugin)

Too bad ... something so simple!

There isn't a standard analog connection from the cdrom to the sound card
on the new macs. If you use xmms there is a plugin for doing cd audio
which should work.
