/usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 is the real XFree 4 executable, and comes with
XFree86-server-4.0-6mdk  package. It is the only X server, where as XFree 3 had
many differents (SVGA,S3,etc...). /etc/X11/X is just a link to one of them, so
you can easily switch between different versions just changing it.
