That is your mistake. A version number up in -preX series from Linus or -acX
from Alan does not imply a 'better' kernel. Many times a preX version introduces
changes that have to be tested for inclussion in the official kernel version.
An -ac series kernel can be even unable to build due to some mistake in
patch merging. I usually build my own kernels, and follow lkml, and many bugs
appear in the next days of a kernel pre-release. For example, the latest
-ac series has been a bunch of test about VM, swap, etc until it seems to
have reached a more or less stable point.
A bad example (no intention to hurt...) is the kernel released with Mandrake8.
If the release had been a week later, the problem with new aic7xxx will have
been solved, because it was discovered and the driver was updated by that date.
Anyways, cooker is cooker, and it could perfectly include the -ac kernel a few
hours after release, but then do not send any mail claiming 'my disk was
toasted by latest mdk kernel'. And it is hard to build a kernel each even day.
For stable use, I would prefer the Linus pre series. It usually only includes
bug fixes or very well tested changes (note, 'usually'...).
BTW, 2.4.6 is out, but it is already old. 2.4.7-pre3 and 2.4.6-ac1 are also
out.
