I hate to come in to the conversation late, but...
I've had good luck with the "Nedit" editor. It's an X app, and
works like a simple editor on the Mac or PC:
Control-C Copy
Control-X Cut
Control-V Paste
Etc. An RPM is available (Lesstif is required). It's far easier
to use than Emacs, vi, or even pico, if you come from the Mac or Windows
world.
