I also have an Acer laptop (but it's a Travelmate 602TER); suspend works OK, but suspend to disk is not reliable. Suspend to disk uses a file in the Windows partition, though. Some laptops will go horribly wrong if X is running when they are suspended; try switching to a text console and see if that helps.
