Technically speaking, if it isn't listed on the type certificate, then it's a major modification and requires a 337 UNLESS it's a PMA approved replacement for the EXACT part that IS listed on the TC.

The charge rate is not dependant on the capacity of the alternator, as long as you are not exceeding the maximum rate. When the battery's fully charged, the current reading on the gauge should be pretty small, like 5 amps or so. If it's higher, you're over charging the battery. If it's negative, You are over drawing the system. If you have a 35 amp charging system and a fully charged battery and a 30 amp draw, you're still only going to see 5 amps on the meter. Regulators for generators have current limiting contacts, so if you have a regulator from a 12 amp generator with a 35 amp generator, you're not going to get 35 amps. On the other hand, if you have a 35 amp generator and a 12 amp regulator and a 10 amp draw, every thing will look fine, but if you have a 20 amp draw, even the 35 amp generator will not keep up. > > I would think the solid state unit would be the > answer. If you need a regulator, it's a good product.
