If you have the voltage regulator for the 12A generator it does not matter if you actually have a 35A generator. One of the functions of the voltage regulator in a generator system is to limit maximum current since a genreator is not self limiting and will give more than its rated current until it overheats and burns out. So it sounds like you have the wrong voltage regulator.
You should open your baggage compartment and read the part number off of the mounting foot of the regulator. I have a 35A voltage regulator removed from service I would be willing to sell or trade for a 12A part. The part I have is Delco 1119220D 12VN 6K which is 14V, 35A. I would trade for a 1118259 as shown in the coupe manual or equivalent.
