Well Andy,

I sort of agree with you.  I ALWAYS fly by time (3 hours on the tach from full tanks to refueling) but the header gauge is not a fuel gauge - it is a fuel pump fail indicator <g>.  Seriously, If the header gauge starts to drop I get very nervous.  I try to always refuel before it happens.  But the header gauge is the only indication I have that something might be wrong with the fuel pump.

This last January I finally got to fly after almost 3 weeks busy with holidays and work.  As I was departing the pattern I noticed that the header gauge was down!  That got my attention fast (particularly with full tanks).  I landed and refilled the header tank and flew T&G's to make sure I was not seeing things.  Nope - I tried heating the fuel pump by covering the hot engine with a blanket for a bit and running a heater in the hangar but several flight produced the same result.  I decide to have an early annual and was checking out replacement pumps but it turned out to be a frozen fuel line (probably in the right cabin area).  My FBO's heated hangar fixed it just fine.

The moral (for me) is the header gauge is important but not as a fuel gauge.  I need to remember to check it more often no matter how full the mains are.

Subject: Re: [COUPERS-TECH] Fuel Cap.
My fuel Capacity gauge works excellent... it's the little timer on the panel.
Fly by time, never trust the gauges.
