Thank you Percy for the kudos. To your comments. I checked the available documentation on the web regarding the engine on the proposed Sport Pilot planes. "A single, non-turbine engine, if powered" A turbonormalized or turbocharged engine is not a turbine. An additional requirement is the low powered engine. I think a 90 hp turborcharged 2 stroke diesel will perfectly fit in there. As for engines being airpumps... totally true. That's why our normally aspirated Continentals fail at high altitude. In that thin air you need an extra pump to keep the engine in it's designed power range. Leaning is one way to adjust for the lesser weight of air, but it gives you of course also less power. If you burn less you'll get less. Like I said, everyone wants power - nothing wrong with giving the engine a chance to develop this power at altitude. An additional point to consider: The 2 stroke Diesel does develop power at every rotation. Means when the piston reaches the top - bumm - power. That way you will have always two cylinders banging at the same time versus in a 4 stroke engine where only one cylinder fires at a time. (four cylinder engines provided) . That's why a 2 stroke will have way less vibration and can develop a high power at a low RPM. The vibration plus the resulting noise is what bugs me with the current Ercoupe design. When I took my last checkride in a Cherokee, I noticed how less noisy the plane was. Admitted a 4 stroke 4 cylinder engine too here, but somehow much better insulated. Since I can not imagine how more to insulate engine noise in our Coupes, eleminating some noise and vibration right on the source seems to me a good idea. As a last thing tonight I want to tell you why the Ercoupe became my choice of Aircraft. While taking my initial flying lessons I checked all planes out there in my price range. I wanted to be able to fly fast and have at least 4 seats for my friends, better 6 seats. After this insane thinking was over I focused on what I really want. And that was flying. Being in the air. Going some places sure, but the time to get there was not so important. I realized that flying was the destination, not reaching a destined point. With taht in mind 100MPH cruising was just fine. And it still is. Also most of my friends appeared to be chicken or are living abroad, so I fly mostly alone. Choosing between all the designs in that speed range I choose the best looking plane available. I am happy with the Coupe as it is, if only the noise and the lack of performance at altitude could be fixed. I love to fly high. I don't need aerobatics or high powered flybys to fuel my ego. Being above the clouds is a wonder I admire evrytime I have a chance to do so. Why would I want to by so fast?
